Ofcom commissions study on Licence Exempt spectrum

Ofcom have commissioned Quotient Associates Ltd to perform a study that will investigate likely future demand for licence exempt spectrum.

Ofcom have commissioned Quotient Associates Ltd to perform a study that will investigate likely future demand for licence exempt spectrum and assess the ability of licence exempt spectrum to meet this demand in the period to 2020.

Devices and applications based on licence exempt spectrum have become increasingly important in the past decade. Although a primary interest is Wi-Fi and the bands this technology currently uses, i.e. 2.4 and 5GHz, the work will also consider the potential for other applications and technologies to use other licence exempt bands, to create new licence exempt bands or to use the white space in existing bands. Additionally the project will investigate factors which may influence the balance between licensed and licence exempt spectrum.
