WINES for Industry

Wired and Wireless Intelligent Networked Systems (WINES) is a £22m EPSRC programme, which supported novel technologies and systems related to transport monitoring, body sensors, the urban environment, sport monitoring and aerial vehicles is now looking for opportunities to engage with industry.

In recent years EPSRC invested a total of £22M in the Wired and Wireless Intelligent Networked Systems (WINES) programme, which supported novel technologies and systems related to transport monitoring, body sensors, the urban environment, sport monitoring, market trading and aerial vehicles, amongst others. Electronics, Sensors, Photonics KTN and EPSRC are now looking for opportunities to transfer knowledge from the WINES programme to industry.

According to Dr. Derek Gillespie, EPSRC Senior Portfolio Manager, Information & Communication Technologies, it is very important that the WINES community maintained excellent communication channels with the wider academic community, UK industry and other users of research, in order to maximise the potential for impact to emerge from their work. However, given both the distributed nature and range of sizes of UK companies potentially interested in the outcomes of WINES, it was noted that this was a significant challenge.

The new opportunity for the WINES to boost knowledge transfer activities comes from the Technology Strategy Board, which is planning a competition in late October 2013, entitled ‘The Internet of Sensors’. This competition seeks to address opportunities in sensor systems at the confluence of mobile computing, sensor technology and actionable information – a theme which resonates strongly with work carried out under the WINES programme.

Given these points, EPSRC and the ESP KTN are pleased to invite you and your colleagues to a one-day networking and information-sharing workshop, to be held in London on 26 September 2013. This workshop will bring together WINES grant holders – who will have an opportunity to update attendees on progress and developments arising from WINES – and representatives of relevant UK companies, alongside EPSRC staff and TSB Technologists.
