Wireless industry has critical role to play in creating a sustainable world

Dr Sally Uren looks to wireless to close the gap between technology and people

Sally Uren, Chief Executive at Forum for the Future, will be calling on the wireless industry to play its part in creating a sustainable world, when she delivers her keynote address at the CW ‘Changing the World with Wireless Technology’ Conference on 30 June & 1 July in Cambridge.  Dr Uren will highlight the importance of facilitating communication and collaboration between people and devices and how wireless technologies have a critical role to play in successfully closing the last metre of engagement.

“Digital technologies have shown time and time again that they have the potential to disrupt established systems and hasten the transition to a positive and sustainable future,” said Dr Uren.

“However, key to their success is the successful engagement of people. Too many technology solutions ignore the ‘last metre’ – the gap between the technology and the human user.  Failing to bridge this gap nullifies the success of the entire venture.”

Sally Uren will join other industry experts, academics and international development specialists to address over 400 delegates at the Future of Wireless International Conference organised by Cambridge Wireless (CW) – the leading international community for companies involved in the research, development and application of wireless and mobile technologies, in partnership with UKTI. Forum for the Future was set up in 1996 and is an independent, non-profit organisation working globally with business, government and other organisations to solve complex sustainability challenges.

“The systems that our society relies on are creaking at the seams and are not delivering on the needs of the present population, let alone the increased demands of the future population,” said Dr Uren “We urgently need businesses, new and old, to lead the way in creating better systems and there are two key ‘levers of change’. The first is by simplifying and optimising complex data to reveal new insights and drive informed actions; the second is by providing a virtually frictionless means of collaboration that allows people to share their resources – ideas, belongings, time, cash, etc.”

“We are delighted the Sally Uren has agreed to speak at our annual conference,” said Dr Soraya Jones, CEO at CW. “This year’s theme is focused on how wireless technologies can make a positive change to peoples’ lives and help address societal and global challenges. We will be looking at a wide range of topics from supporting economic development and improving literacy and health, to ensuring public safety, improving the sustainability of the earth’s resources and cultivating entrepreneurship.”
