CW members elect new Board

The new members are Faye Holland of Cofinitive and Sylvia Lu of u-blox. David Cleevely was also re-elected to the Board.

CW’s chairman, Raj Gawera of Samsung, said

We set out to make the most of this board election cycle to increase the level of diversity and inclusion. So I’m absolutely delighted that the membership has elected Sylvia and Faye and I’m confident they will bring a great contribution to the future of CW. I’m also very pleased that David Cleevely has been re-elected so we can benefit from his wealth of experience.

Faye Holland said I am passionate about multi-generational, inclusive and collaborative environments and look forward to working with the board on how this can be harnessed to extend the global reach and results of CW.

Sylvia Lu said Having been a ‘Future Technology SIG champion’ for nearly 4 years, a committee member for CW TEC and more recently a member of the CW Journal Editorial Board – I’m excited to take this next step in my CW journey. I’m looking forward to working alongside the CW team and my fellow board members to shape an exciting future for CW!

Three Board members are standing down from the Board including Professor William Webb, the current Deputy Chairman; Paul Ceely, the Head of Mobile Network Strategy for BT; and Professor John Haine, of Bristol University.

The Board met on the 3rd May and expressed deep gratitude to John, Paul and William for their hard work and support delivered on behalf of members over the years. The next phase of managing the Board composition is the selection of complementary appointed Directors and we expect that process to be concluded during the Autumn of 2017.

Professor William Webb said "It has been a real honour to serve on the Board of CW over many years, helping with activities such as the Prestigious Lectures, 5G Debates and having the chance to network widely with the amazing community of members. I'm sure CW will grow even stronger over the coming years."

Paul Ceely said “It has been a privilege to be on the board and play a part in the progress of CW to help its members network, learn, and grow. I'm really pleased to hand over to the talented new board members who will drive the organisation on. I will continue to be an active member of CW and look forward to participating in future events and programmes”.

John Haine said "It has been a pleasure working with the CW Board over the past 3 years but being retired I want to make space for those vibrant elected members. I'm certainly not severing my connection to CW and look forward to chairing the editorial board of the new Journal and being a SIG Champ for a while yet!"

Faye Holland, Founder & Director of Cofinitive Ltd.
Faye Holland is founder of Cofinitive Ltd, a communications and engagement company based in Cambridge, UK. Faye has launched, transformed (and retired) dozens of projects and, as an experienced communicator, works cohesively at all levels of organisations and their stakeholder communities. Prior to founding Cofinitive, Faye ran the European and Asia-Pacific operations of a global media company. She worked at IBM on numerous emerging technology projects including wireless e-business, wireless broadband solutions and RFID.
Faye started her career locally at PIPEX, where she was responsible for UK and Ireland marcomms for direct and indirect sales and launched the first iteration of PIPEX Dial.
Faye is locally recognised as chair of the Connectivity Group in Cambridge Ahead and spearheaded the #CambsNotspotter campaign, in which some CW members have also been involved. Faye has recently been shortlisted in numerous awards, locally and nationally, including Unsung Hero and Women Entrepreneur of the Year.

Sylvia Lu, Senior Engineer, Cellular Technology, u-blox UK
Sylvia is a tech enthusiast and practising engineer. She has over 10 years’ industry experience in wireless communication R&D, technology standards and innovation. Her technical background includes algorithm design, DSP development for LTE modems, receiver architecture, performance, standards and technology strategy. Sylvia represents u-blox in 3GPP standards and leads its standardisation activities for low complexity cellular communications for the Internet of Things. Since 2013, Sylvia’s interest and work has been focused on tracking trends and contributing to the latest technology development on LPWAN, connected vehicles (V2X), device direct communications, LTE in unlicensed bands, and 5G. Recently Sylvia was named as one of the best women in engineering. Sylvia holds a first degree in Electronic Engineering from Birmingham University and an MSc. in Communications and Signal Processing from the University of Bristol.

Dr. David Cleevely CBE, FREng, FIET
David Cleevely CBE FREng FIET was appointed the Founding Director and Executive Committee Member of the Centre for Science and Policy, University of Cambridge in 2009.
He is the Chairman of CRFS, which he co-founded in July 2007, and the founder and former Chairman of telecoms consultancy Analysys (acquired by Datatec International in 2004). In 1998, he co-founded the web based antibody company Abcam (ABC.L) with Jonathan Milner and was Chairman until November 2009.
He has invested in over 35 companies and is co-founder and Chairman of five of them, including the award winning restaurant “Bocca di Lupo”. He has been a prime mover behind Cambridge Network, co-founder of Cambridge Wireless, co-founder and Chairman of Cambridge Angels and is a member of the IET Communications Policy Panel. For 8 years until March 2009 he was a member of the Ofcom Spectrum Advisory Board. From 2001 to 2008 he was a member of the Ministry of Defence Board overseeing information systems and services (DES-ISS, formerly the Defence Communications Services Agency).
He is Chairman of the Raspberry Pi Foundation and the Cambridge Science Centre and is an Ambassador of the Cambridge Humanitarian Centre.
After being sponsored to study Cybernetics at Reading by Post Office Telecommunications, he joined their Long Range Studies Division. A PhD at Cambridge was then followed by the Economist Intelligence Unit in London. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and the IET.
