CW goes to China

In October 2019 CW’s CEO Simon Mead and Senior Business Development & Operations Manager Patricia Chan travelled to China on a visit kindly organised by the China Electronics Chamber of Commerce (CECC) and Tuspark. 

A 300km/h bullet train took the CW team from Beijing to the Shijiazhuang International Convention and Exhibition Centre, the site of the China International Digital Economy Expo just to the southwest of Beijing, in an hour. There, Simon addressed an audience of well over one thousand business leaders and officials on the size and impact of the digital economy in the UK, emphasising facts such as the UK attracts more venture capital funding than Sweden, France and Germany combined (PwC Global Innovation Study 2018).  He shared the stage with the Former First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Poland (Grzegorz W Kolodko) and the 2004 Nobel Economics Prize Laureate (Edward Prescott).  CIDEE 2019 also hosted a vast exhibition of Chinese and international digital businesses. 100,000 people visited the stands over the course of the expo’s three days. 

On return to Beijing, Simon presented at the launch of Tuspark’s China-UK Innovation Centre on the Tuspark Science Park.  Tuspark are building the physical space and service portfolio to enable UK technology companies to expand more easily into China. The innovation environment that has been built is exceptional, and worth consideration if any CW members are looking to expand into that territory.

The final visit of the trip went further south. The Jiangsu Science Park in Changzhou town is a couple of hours by car from central Shanghai. The Chinese government is currently offering considerable incentives to companies who decide to set up in this area. The vast area of land dedicated to the park is broken up into districts, with one visited by Simon and Pat focusing on intelligent driving and another on Industrial IoT.

Overall, the trip emphasised the enthusiasm of China for international businesses to establish offices in their country, and the credibility and competence of the support services available.
