CW Members Smarten Mobility at CES 2020

The annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is one of the largest and craziest technology events of the year. Innovators from across the world come together to demonstrate what our lives could be like in the future, and this year that future included a lot of robots, talk about 5G, content delivery and most prominently for many of CW’s members, smart mobility.

Many members of CW’s community exhibit CES each year. In case you’ve missed their announcements, here is a quick round-up of some of the biggest news stories:

Samsung – “The Age of Experience”

On top of the expected announcements around sleek new TVs and health and fitness applications, Samsung had a couple of surprises up its sleeve for CES. The first to make the UK News was Ballie, the BB-8-like spherical robot who follows you around the house to record your special moments but who, in a rather Dalek-like manner, struggles with stairs. More significant than this home device were Samsung’s announcements in the automotive space. They are collaborating with BMW to make the iNEXT the world’s first 5G-enabled car equipped with HARMAN and Samsung technology and also unveiled “Digital Cockpit 2020”, a platform that utilises 5G, eight cameras, eight displays, the Samsung Exynos Auto V9 SoC (System on Chip), a semiconductor for vehicle electronics, and Android 10 to provide connected experiences for drivers and passengers alike. To cap off what is a great CES for Samsung, they won three different sustainability awards for their materials management and upcycling programmes.

Qualcomm

Qualcomm’s CES was 5G-themed. They addressed delegates on the themes of 5G mobile security, how businesses can take advantage of the 5G Wireless Revolution and immersive media. Automotive featured prominently at their booth where they showcased concept systems for car infotainment, automotive wireless solutions and autonomous driving technology. To accompany this, they reiterated their commitment to their partnership with General Motors, introduced a car-to-cloud system for over-the-air vehicle updates and launched Qualcomm Snapdragon Ride, a combination of high-performance, power-efficient hardware, industry-leading artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and pioneering autonomous driving stack focused on addressing the complexity of smart car development.

Magna International – “Bringing freedom to mobility”

As a massive supplier into the automotive industry, Magna’s CES was predictably car focused. Their booth focused on three key areas of mobility: autonomy, electrification and smart mobility. Most excitingly, CW member Magna worked alongside Sony in the development of their VISION-S prototype vehicle.

Arm

Each year Arm IP is deployed in practically every single exhibition booth in CES. On top of the exciting “Snapdragon Ride” announcement from Qualcomm, this year Arm focused on a collaboration with Siemens to bring the PAVE260 platform to automakers to ease the simulation and validation process for Arm-based automotive systems long before it enters an actual car.  Their other partnership of choice was with Green Hills Software, a leader in embedded safety and security, who are working with Mahindra Racing on an all-electric Formula-E car. Teams from Arm are supporting Green Hills Software to ensure that Mahindra’s applications run with maximum performance and reliability on the underlying Arm®-based automotive processor from Renesas in order to achieve improved powertrain efficiency, battery controller safety, high assurance and accurate data logging and secure vehicle communication.

Amazon

Potentially the highest end of the CW Member automotive announcements, Amazon announced a new partnership with Lamborghini whose upcoming Huracan Evo will feature Alexa. At the same time Alexa is getting an upgrade with new application specifically for drivers and passengers, for example “Alexa, pay for gas” powered by Amazon Pay and Fiserv. The company is considering how they can make it easier for automotive manufacturers to update software and security and track vehicle performance, and have developed a new AWS platform with Blackberry (who own a very popular car operating system). And finally, they shared details of collaborations with BOSCH, HERE, MELCO, Telenav and TomTom, all of which would result in an increased Amazonian presence in our vehicles in the future.
