Spotlight on Incubyte

A few months back, we were introduced to Incubyte; a co-working environment and business incubator for technology based startups. I took a trip down to their new HQ to catch up the Founder, Rob Precious.

Based on the Cambridge Innovation Park in Waterbeach, Incubyte has taken up residence in a modern 45,000sq ft architect-designed building, Stirling House.

So far, the Park is home to 40 companies from a range of industries; technology, recruitment, property and include the likes of Arcam and Camtek. As a serviced office building, Stirling House has everything you would expect it to have; decent sized offices, coffee shop, communal networking areas and plenty of parking. But talking through the plans for Incubyte with Rob, they are incorporating some simple but savvy edits to the typical co-working space. Working outside for example…great in theory, but awkward in reality. Stirling House will have outdoor desk space with strategic awnings to remove that pesky sun glare.

The whole site is approx. 10 acres and there is a lot more construction taking place on the park. A stone’s throw away is Blenheim House which will provide additional office space to cater for established technology companies, and to which startups or SMEs can expand into, boasting a gym, creche and café. Behind Cambridge Innovation Park is an expanse of brownfield site which Urban&Civic are redeveloping in partnership with the Ministry of Defence. The development will see two new access points onto the A10 and a residential development with leisure facilities on the banks of a large lake.

Rob went on to say:

Waterbeach is the focus of a huge amount of residential and commercial development and improvement at the moment, and we are excited to be right at the heart of it and right at the outset. Cambridge needs more capacity to nurture its thriving science and technology industries, and we want to provide somewhere that is inspiring and energising for people to work and live.

For the heritage hunters among us, Cambridge Innovation Park is located close to the old RAF Waterbeach where it was in service just 20 years ago. Paragon Land & Estates, the property developer, bought the site for a poultry sum compared to its current valuation. You can see the side turrets off Stirling House which house 2 spacious meeting rooms on each side. The buildings are named after the famous Stirling and Blenheim bombers which played a vital role in World War 2. A nice nod to the past.

Taking shelter from the heat and building works, Rob explained how Incubyte was formed and their plans for the future. As announced in the press release, we’ve learnt that Incubyte will act as an incubator and accelerator for tech startups by providing a personalised programme of support, access to mentors as well as a series of workshops and talks with some of the leading names in business. Rob is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about tech startups, particularly in industries such as entertainment/media, AI & deep learning, fintech and agritech.

Rob went on to explain the investor landscape available to startups enrolling with Incubyte:

Incubyte has a wide and extensive network of current co-investors and contacts from all areas of the investment community. These range from first time, self-made entrepreneur angel investors; seasoned professional angels and angel syndicates to EIS and SEIS focused start-up and growth funds through to VC and strategic corporate investment.
