Things Connected - Open Call for Watford

Watford Borough Council is seeking cutting-edge startups and scaleups to help develop LPWAN-enabled solutions to solve challenges facing local authorities in the UK. Challenge winners will receive up to £20k investment to run a live trial.

The challenges are:

  • Parking – How could LPWAN-enabled solutions help Watford Borough Council more efficiently identify if a specific vehicle is parked in a particular location, and then communicate that information to parking enforcement officers or the general public?
  • Footfall – How could an LPWAN-enabled solution help Watford Borough Council capture and generate footfall data in a cost-effective and flexible way?

More detail about the challenges can be found in the Knowledge Pack.

Why should you get involved?

Competition finalists will pitch their solution to a panel of experts and key decision-makers from Watford Borough Council and get feedback on their proposed solutions.

The winners of each challenge will then have the opportunity to work with Watford Borough Council and Digital Catapult to trial their solution in a live environment.

This includes:

  • Access to up to £20k investment funding.
  • Use of an existing experimental LoRaWAN network across a busy urban area.
  • The opportunity to publicly pitch their solution in front of an audience which includes  public authority representatives, local businesses and the council’s Digital Watford Board (made up of elected members, council officers and other public sector organisations).
  • Access to local authority networks, including local retailers, the Chamber of Commerce, the Business Improvement District and other local authorities.
  • The potential to develop a relationship with a commercially-minded local authority (see Knowledge Pack for more information), including further investment from the council or its commercial company.

Who should apply?

Cutting edge startups and scaleups who can develop LPWAN-enabled solutions that address either of the above challenges in parking and footfall detection.
