Welcome note
There are many questions to be asked about AI: perhaps first and foremost, does it really work yet? Other than for playing board games?
We’ve received several answers to that one in the course of producing this issue: examples include ‘that depends what data set you use’, ‘the reason we don’t call ordinary control systems “AI” is that they work’, and, sometimes, ‘yes’.
One thing is quite clear, the world is definitely passing through what has been known in the past as an ‘AI summer,’ and it seems at least possible that this time there will be no winter to follow. In that case there are even more questions: which AI tools are best? What’s the right hardware approach? How can we, practically, ensure transparency?
At CWJ we don’t claim to know all the answers yet: it’s the magazine’s aim to start conversations, not finish them. But we like to think we’ve done that, at least, in this issue.
Lewis Page, Then-Editor, CW Journal
I’m pleased to report that the first issue of the Cambridge Wireless Journal was received very positively, to judge by the results of our member survey following publication. I hope that this one will be equally useful to our members: please do get in touch and share your thoughts. We also actively seek articles and contributions from readers, and I would urge CW members to take up this opportunity.
This issue of the magazine addresses the subject of AI, one on which opinions often differ. CWJ’s distinguished Editorial Board is by no means united on the subject or the many different debates involved with it, so it would be unreasonable to expect unity among the readership. Suffice it to say, the Board and the editorial team have done our best to present as many viewpoints as possible.
To get in touch, please email [email protected]. And if this is not your copy of the magazine and you’d like to be added to the mailing list please email [email protected].
