Wireless industry leaders convene to advance sustainability
With next generation wireless technology set to be a key enabler for environmental targets and quality of living improvements, the telecommunications sector needs to be ready to deliver its enabling technologies across all geographies and sectors.
“For the wireless industry, 2021 is the year where sustainability, at multiple levels, has truly come to the fore,” says Julie Bradford, Managing Consultant at Real Wireless and chair of the CWIC 2021 Organising Committee. “But when considering the impact that the wireless industry will have on climate change, it is critical to look beyond the simplistic tally of our own sector’s emissions – even though there is no denying that this is important. Wireless is an enabling technology for many industries and the operational insights that businesses will gain from next generation connectivity will drive efficiencies across the board. It is central to the digital economy of the future and we are gathering at CWIC to advance its rollout.”
Leading the conversation at the event are thirty industry experts who are championing the sustainable rollout of wireless technology. These include Ruth Pritchard Kelly (OneWeb), Clive Carter and Mat Sears (BT), Mike Biddle (Innovate UK), Hamish MacLeod (Mobile UK), Hannah Homes (Cambridge Centre for Housing & Planning Research), David Owens (Virgin Media O2), Noelle Godfrey (Connecting Cambridgeshire) and Joey Pan (Huawei).
“The next generation of wireless networks has the potential to reshape the ways society works, helping businesses to work more efficiently and growing our digital economy. Cambridge Wireless is a leading hub of cutting-edge innovation and, through its work, it is helping the industry push boundaries and make real breakthroughs,” says Joey Pan, Director of Industry and Public Affairs at Huawei. “Through our support, technology and expertise, Huawei is committed to working with the industry and all of our partners to not only encourage growth and innovation, but to use ICT to reduce carbon emissions across all industries, putting sustainability at the centre of everything we do.”
“Tomorrow’s agenda is encouraging business leaders to examine the topic of wireless sustainability from all angles. We will look at how the wireless sector can be more environmentally friendly in its own right, how it is enabling greater sustainability in other sectors and how it is advancing health, social care and education. But, critically, we are exploring how we can deliver all this good in a financially sustainable way for the companies responsible for rolling out wireless technology,” says Simon Mead, CEO of CW (Cambridge Wireless).
The CW International Conference is taking place on 9 November at IWM Duxford and online. Tickets are available from £50. More details and registration is available at https://www.cambridgewireless.co.uk/cwic/
