New Chairperson and Board Members Appointed to CW

CW News published by CW (Cambridge Wireless)

CW is delighted to announce the appointment of Stephen Unger as Chair of the Board of Directors following the successful reign of Raj Gawera.

Many of you will be familiar with Stephen who has spent much of his career working with wireless technologies. He started out using radio telescopes for astronomical research, before gaining his first commercial experience with Ionica, the Cambridge company that built the world’s first fixed wireless network.

He then moved to Ofcom, the UK regulator for digital communications.  He was an executive member of Ofcom’s Board, served as Ofcom’s Chief Technology Officer, and as Acting Chief Executive. He led the teams responsible for setting strategy for digital communications in the UK, and for representing the UK internationally.

Stephen now holds a portfolio of non-executive and advisory roles in the technology sector. A common theme across his portfolio is an interest in how innovators, entrepreneurs, and government can work together to generate economic growth and social value.

“Wireless connectivity touches every aspect of our lives, and the CW community has a brilliant track record developing innovative solutions to improve it. Connectivity has become an enabler of innovation across the economy, creating a wealth of opportunities for further growth. I’m really looking forward to working with the CW team, to help people with great ideas collaborate to make them real“

Stephen will be supported by the board of CW including existing board members Olu Orugboh and Kumi Thiruchelvam who have been newly appointed as Vice Chairs.

CW are also pleased to announce three new board members after our recent election: Julie Bradford, Collette Johnson and Chris Bruce.

Julie brings 15 year’s experience in the wireless industry and is the lead in techno-economics for Real Wireless. She’s a long time Champion for the Virtual Networks SIG and last year was the Chair of the CW International Conference committee.

“I am absolutely delighted to be joining the CW board - many thanks to the CW membership for their support.
The wireless ecosystem is rapidly changing and I think CW has a key role to play in bringing together stakeholders from across the user, equipment, infrastructure, service provision and solutions spaces.” –
Julie Bradford

Collette is an accomplished strategic marketer, having worked with companies from global organisations to start-ups and scale-ups, and was named as one of the Top 100 Product Marketing Influencers globally in 2020. She’s worked previously with CW as a SIG Champion for both the Business and Healthcare groups.

"I'm really excited to be joining the board at Cambridge Wireless, I've been part of this fantastic community for over a decade and it's been a significant organisation in developing my career. I very much look forward in help to drive it's growth on building on this already excellent organisation" – Collette Johnson

Chris has a wealth of knowledge in the industry after spending the last 30 years working in wireless, internet and cloud sectors. He’s had various senior roles at BT, including as CEO for BT OpenZone Wi-Fi and spent 10 years on the board of the Wireless Broadband Alliance.

"I am delighted to join the Cambridge Wireless Board and am looking forward to contributing to the undoubted growth potential of this unique eco-system that brings together innovation from companies large and small." – Chris Bruce

We would like to thank everybody who applied for the Board position roles and will keep our members aware of new openings in the future.
