Deep tech is becoming the foundation of competitive resilience

Looking at the agenda for this year's Cambridge Tech Week, it's striking how quickly the conversation has evolved.

A few years ago, many discussions centred on the promise of emerging technologies. Today, the focus feels noticeably different. Whether the topic is AI, connectivity, quantum or robotics, the emphasis has shifted from possibility to practicality. Less about just what technology can do, and more on what organisations must do to scale, deploy and realise its value.

This is reflected in The Deep Tech Index 2026, which we'll be launching at Cambridge Tech week and explores innovation through the eyes of the leaders responsible for funding it, sponsoring it and bringing it to life inside complex organisations. Similarly, our recent report Forging a new era for the industrial world examines how AI-enabled deep tech is reshaping industries from energy and telecoms to transportation and space.

While approaching innovation from different perspectives, both reports arrive at a similar conclusion: the organisations most likely to thrive over the next decade need more than access to advanced technologies – they need the ability to adapt, respond and create value in an increasingly interconnected and uncertain world.

In other words, resilience is king.

Complexity is changing the rules: moving from silos to systems

As we explore in Forging a new era for the industrial world, industries that once operated independently are increasingly converging. Energy systems are becoming dependent on digital infrastructure. Telecoms networks are evolving into intelligent, software-driven platforms. As these systems become more interconnected, the consequences of disruption become more far-reaching. Energy influences compute, connectivity influences transportation and cybersecurity influences critical infrastructure. That is why resilience is emerging as such an important strategic capability. As deep tech becomes embedded in the systems that power economies and societies, competitive advantage will increasingly come from the ability to build organisations and infrastructure that can absorb shocks, adapt to changing conditions and continue moving forward through uncertainty.

This is where deep tech becomes critical. More than a collection of breakthrough technologies, it acts as a foundation for resilient, interconnected systems designed to both deliver next-generation performance and endure whatever challenges come their way.

But this shift needs more than just technology. As systems become more interconnected, the challenge facing organisations becomes more complex. As well as the technologies they adopt, success depends on their ability to align people, priorities, investment and execution behind them.

The same principle applies beyond organisational boundaries. True resilience requires collaboration across industries, technologies and organisations. Energy providers must work alongside network operators, infrastructure owners alongside technology innovators, and public and private sector organisations must work together to solve challenges that no single organisation can solve alone.

That thinking sits at the heart of The Deep Tech Index 2026, which explores what stands between innovation ambition and breakthrough. As deep tech becomes increasingly central to business strategy, success depends not just on recognising opportunity, but on creating the conditions needed to act on it.

The leaders creating the most value will be those capable of orchestrating technologies, stakeholders and systems simultaneously. In doing so, they will both accelerate innovation and build resilience at a system level.
