Find out more about Morse Micro

How long has your company been in operation, and what was the inspiration for its founding?
"Andy Terry and I (Michael De Nil) founded Morse Micro in 2016 as we saw an opportunity in the IoT market where you need a reliable connection and longer range with lower power. We saw that many of the big semiconductor chip vendors didn’t have the engineering cycles available to develop a solution.  Wi-Fi chips for smartphones have a powerful battery but they have to be recharged every night with little regard for multi-year operation on a smaller battery. Based on our experience in developing Wi-Fi chips, Andy and I saw an opportunity to design a solution from scratch with low power which is low-cost. We both invested $25,000 in savings to get Morse Micro off the ground and five years later announced one of the industry’s first Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ HaLow™ solutions and best in class performance." - Michael De Nil, CEO & Co-Founder

What is special about your company’s products/services?
While conventional Wi-Fi is the most ubiquitous wireless communications protocol in use today, the rapid growth of the IoT has forced a rethinking of Wi-Fi, revealed technological gaps and what role it needs to play in an all-encompassing connected world. The higher demands for long-range connectivity and low power requirements for many IoT and machine-to-machine (M2M) applications are ushering in Wi-Fi HaLow at an increasingly faster rate this year and for the years ahead.

Morse Micro is among the first semiconductor companies to offer certifiable Wi-Fi HaLow chipsets, modules, and reference designs available now to be deployed by customers for to be used in both indoor and outdoor applications where standard Wi-Fi cannot reach. Its Wi-Fi CERTIFIED™ HaLow™ solutions and industry’s first 8 MHz reference design highlight our company’s technology leadership. As the leading Wi-Fi HaLow innovator, we have invested heavily in R&D to ensure the market is ready with SoCs and modules that deliver unmatched benefits unlike any Wi-Fi or LPWAN technology available today.

Which among your recent announcements is your company most proud of?
I would have to say our most recent development where Morse Micro was among the first to announce the industry’s first Wi-Fi CERTIFIED HaLow reference design and industry’s first 8MHz reference design. Designed in compliance with the IEEE 802.11ah standard, Morse Micro’s Wi-Fi HaLow platform is poised to redefine low-power, long-reach Wi-Fi connectivity for the IoT.  The MM6108 and MM6104 SoCs provide a single-chip Wi-Fi HaLow solution incorporating the radio, PHY and MAC and offering data rates that range from tens of Mbps to hundreds of Kbps at the farthest range. The radio supports operation in sub-GHz ISM bands worldwide between 850 MHz and 950 MHz.

The MM6104 SoC supports 1, 2 and 4 MHz channel bandwidth. The higher performance MM6108 SoC supports 1, 2, 4 and 8 MHz bandwidth and is capable of delivering tens of Mbps throughput to support streaming HD video. These Wi-Fi HaLow SoCs provide 10x the range, 100x the area and 1000x the volume of traditional Wi-Fi solutions.

How would you describe your company culture?
Morse Micro's culture is what sets us apart from other companies. We are a team of innovators that thrive off of challenging the status quo. What we offer is a unique opportunity to be in a high growth company, where the work you do each day makes an impact to the bottom line. We are a very global company, finding experts from around the world to join us - hence recently spinning up a team in Cambridge.

Do you have any job opportunities that might be of interest to the CW community?
Yes, we are very excited to announce that Morse Micro has just recently expanded into Cambridge. The Cambridge Morse Micro team is currently made up of 5 engineers and we are looking to quickly grow our presence there. We are looking for ASIC engineering site leads, engineering experts or up and coming engineers. You can check out our open jobs at www.morsemicro.com/careers.
