  • Beware of complacency in 2024

As we look to the year ahead, the supply chain looks healthier than it has for some time, with good levels of inventory overall, and shorter lead times than we’ve seen for some time. Customers should beware of complacency though, as the economic headwinds that are already visible will mean that this situation won’t last. Inflation continues to have a sustained impact on the economy. Although there is likely to be limited growth in the industrial sector, we expect other markets including those driven primarily by consumer spending to decline.

  • Simplifying Low Power Radio Implementation with Wireless MCUs

In today's ever-evolving technological landscape, wireless connectivity has become an integral part of our lives. Whether it's in the smart home, industrial automation, or healthcare, wireless communication plays a crucial role in connecting devices and enabling the Internet of Things (IoT). This means wireless connectivity using a Low Power Radio (LPR) has become a prerequisite for most hardware designs today, traditionally these have not been easy to implement with this part of the design often left to the “RF” expert within the design department. Thankfully over the years implementing a LPR has become much easier as module solutions became available reducing the time to market vs. building a chip down solution. The next evolution of wireless connectivity is the integration of the radio into the microcontroller (MCU) to further reduce board space and time to market.

  • Technology Briefing: Artificial Intelligence – Transforming the world as we know it

It seems that AI is everywhere and in everything: it’s critical for managing complex infrastructures like vehicle charging networks and the green grid; it’s getting things done in business; and it’s the essential ingredient needed to sell high-tech products. Although we may now be familiar – maybe even bored – with the acronym, the technology is here to stay and is already embedded in many products and services we use daily. Services like email filtering, shopping recommendations, and virtual assistants typified by Alexa and Siri have incorporated AI for some time. They deliver natural experiences that many of us take for granted. Interactive applications, like chatbots, may soon pass the Turing test: that an AI’s imitation skills can consistently convince an evaluator that it is human and not a machine

  • Delivering long battery life in tiny devices

When you wear your earbuds for a long hike or an afternoon at the gym, you don’t want to be interrupted by having to stop and recharge the earpieces. You expect your hearables, wearables, and other tiny, battery powered electronic devices to perform reliably over long periods of time. From a design standpoint, these user expectations are a tall order to meet. The form factor constraints dictate the need for a small Lithium-Ion battery, which must last a long time between charge cycles and be utilized sparingly. Power supplies, in turn, must meet the distinct and diverse voltage requirements of the sub-systems within the design.

  • Simplify power designs with versatile DC-DC converters from TDK that offer unrivalled power density and ease of design

System power architectures can be very complex with semiconductor devices or subsystems operating from different voltages (1.8V, 3.3V or 5V) with current demands ranging from many amps in to microamps. An increasingly popular approach to this challenge is to employ a Point of Load (POL) power system architecture which allows a single power supply bus of typically 12V to be set up, where the voltage is then stepped down to the correct level locally using POL converters for each subsystem circuit or IC.

  • Pushing the Big Button: Finding and Engaging a Partner for Volume Manufacturing

This fourth article in our series following the progress of a new product from inception to delivery in the marketplace, focuses on the move into volume production. Selecting a partner for this step is a decision that warrants detailed research and your commitment to travel and meet candidate companies to be sure of getting the right team on your side. The partner is likely to carry out the full assembly, not just the PCBA so it is imperative for the hunt to start early in the process. A good time might be the point at which the first design is going to prototype. At this stage, you will have a fair idea what the finished product is going to look like, and hence what manufacturing skills are going to be required. The manufacturing partner for the production volumes would likely be the same as the one chosen for the pre-production volumes, so the decision would need to be made by then. The pre-production batch will also then provide an opportunity to validate the relationship.

  • Managing Risk and Keeping Control on the Route to Market - By John Bowman, Marketing Director, Anglia Components and Andrew Pockson, Divisional Marketing Manager, Anglia Components

Starting any business involves more than an element of risk, and for high-tech startups these risks are often amplified by extreme technical complexity. The original team is usually small, maybe even just a group of university friends, with combined competencies that cover just a subset of what’s needed to get their product idea to market. These are usually quite narrowly focused, so completing the product development using in-house resources alone is not feasible.
