  • A golden opportunity to stop selling off the family silver

  • Transportation IOT: Keeping our roads safe

By: Nick Koiza, Head of Security Business at Plextek Ltd As we all start moving around our transport systems again, I am reminded almost daily by the risks and safety concerns linked to our congested road systems. I have a vision that the public should be able to travel easily without worrying about safety on the roads. Aside from education, vehicle servicing, and standard infrastructure maintenance, I believe IoT technologies will significantly enhance the safety of our public whilst they use our road networks. The transportation industry is a huge investor in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), spending approximately $78 billion from 2016-2018. Safety is a part of ‘Transportation IOT’ that is vital for overall success. In this blog, I list what I consider to be the top 5 areas of transport safety that can be enhanced by IoT technologies:

  • Can Trump rapidly deploy his ‘miracle cure’?

By: Nigel Whittle, Head of Medical and Healthcare a Plextek Ltd Last Friday Donald Trump was treated with an antibody cocktail made by the biotech company Regeneron. His recovery has prompted him to call for the drug to be made available to all US citizens through an Emergency Use Authorization. However, the safety and effectiveness of the drug have not yet been proven, and there is no way for the President or his doctors to know that the drug had any effect as most people recover from COVID-19. As the Metro states today: “Trump is just one of 10 people receiving the drug, which is still in the experimental phase and is intended to boost antibodies to fight the infection”. Is it logistically possible to fulfil Trump’s statement and take a drug from small scale testing to Nationwide rollout? In this blog, we unravel a bit of the situation.

  • The mm-Wave Antenna Approach

By: James Henderson, Senior Consultant at Plextek Ltd Over the past eight years of my career, I’ve been fortunate enough to work on several different cutting-edge projects here at Plextek including a number of mm-wave designs. These have included both research programmes and product development, covering radar sensors, communication systems, and medical applications. This has given me a great depth of experience into different approaches to meet our customer’s specific requirements. Over this time, I have found that one of the most challenging aspects of working in this frequency range is the integration of mm-wave front-end electronics with an optimised antenna solution, to provide an efficient, and controlled radiation pattern.

  • How the COVID economic collapse will save the planet

By: Laurence Weir, Technology Lead at Plextek Ltd. On Monday 20th April something happened for the first time in history. Oil companies had started having to pay people to take their oil, as the price dropped below $0 a barrel. Given the complicated business of storing oil, this was not a money-making scheme that was available to many of us.

  • Is 5G the Answer to Connectivity for Industrial IoT?

By: Shahzad Nadeem, Head of Smart Cities at Plextek As the first cellular network technology designed to support industrial use cases, 5G is billed to become the basis for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and enabler for Industry 4.0 technologies, such as VR, AR and AI. Certainly, the promises of super-fast data 5G rates, ultra-low latency and vastly increased network capacity are essential for the high-quality connectivity demands of the industrial sector. But will 5G live up to expectations? What are the challenges and opportunities? And when can we expect to see widespread adoption of the technology?

  • Do you know your (innovation) mountain lion?

By: Alan Cucknell, Head of Ignite Exponential - Plextek's innovation unit. I spent about a year living in the Bay Area of California, a short drive from a few wonderful national parks. It was a particular highlight of this time to run at two of them regularly – Purisima and Montara. They both contained a common danger that I was very unused to as a Brit – mountain lions!

  • Are Friends Electric? Our Future Lives with Robots

By: Nigel Whittle, Head of Medical and Healthcare at Plextek Ltd. The Czech writer Karel Čapek set his play ‘Rossum’s Universal Robots’ in the year 2000, and in his timeline, robots became cheap and widely available, allowing products to be made at one fifth the previous cost[1]. In our universe, robots have become, if not commonplace, at least an accepted feature of the working environment. From the first examples of automated production lines (perhaps most famously in the Nissan car factory) through to robots designed for delicate surgery, we are becoming accustomed to robots having an increasingly prominent role.

  • On uncertainty, being wrong and taking the next right step

By: Alan Cucknell, Head of Ignite Exponential - Plextek's innovation unit. Watching the daily news briefings from both sides of the Atlantic it is interesting to observe how often leaders can be trapped by trying to have all the answers. Perhaps it’s not their fault but something in our society’s expectations that leaders will “show us what the ending will be“; “tell us all the steps we need to follow” or "give us a guarantee". As a result, leaders can fear the implications of a “U-turn”.

  • Making the unconscious conscious

In my last blog I touched on the opportunistic strategy of colliding activism and behavioural change marketing to help create an environment of change. I became fascinated with this concept when I was studying Illustration at university - in fact it was the main reason I decided to go into the field of marketing and public relations.

They are also important when it comes to divorce as they frequently represent one of the most valuable assets along with the matrimonial home.

  • September IoT News: Bottom-line RoI | ARM Nvidia | pregnancy test Doom

As IoT moves beyond a fascination with whizzy new technology ("Can we do it?", "How do we do it?"), everyone is starting to evaluate their hard, financial return-on-investment ("How do we do it profitably?). We're seeing this happen throughout the supply-chain, from device vendors, communications providers, cloud services … and of course in Service Monitoring, too. After more than three years of commercial experience helping customers to successfully scale and become profitable (and a lot of years before that doing it ourselves at previous companies), we've now gathered enough examples to be able to quantify seven different ways in which Service Monitoring typically drives revenue up and costs down, whilst enabling growth – to deliver a great return-on-investment (RoI).
